Bookends

Last week was a very good week. It began on Sunday evening at Lifeteam. I had been entertaining my very special friend, Ethan, with a little game of "Creepy Mousie." This is a game I learned from my mother. I had turned my attention away from Ethan for a minute when I felt a tap on my shoulder. I looked around and Ethan was tapping his wrist. His way of telling me he wasn't ready to stop. I loved it.

On Wednesday evening after church, I got a chance to speak to Randy & Jennifer, our friends home on leave from their mission work in Brazil. Their three-year old son, Kelton was playing at the front of the auditorium, and looked back and saw me. He came running back, gave me a hug, and went back to playing.

It doesn't get much better than that.

The week was rounded off by some girlfriend time on Friday evening with fellow Mary Kay consultants. We sat around, sharing pizza and chocolate, laughter, disappointments, encouragement and goals.

Yes, it was a very good week.

The Ballgame

I went to an ACU basketball game Thursday night. I had a "bad coach" night. I don't know what it was, but I was angry at the coach from the time I walked into the gym. I really couldn't tell you why. Maybe it was because it was the first game we had been to since Christmas, and last year that would have been seeing the guys play for the first time since we got to know them. Maybe it was because we have been talking with Josh's mom and planning a trip down to go with her to see his tombstone for the first time. Maybe it was because this time last year Victoria was starting a semester excited that she would be sharing a class with him. I don't know. Whatever it was, I just was angry with the coach. I know that he did not kill Josh. I know it was not his fault that Josh's cousin ran that stop sign. But I also know that he played a BIG part in Josh's dropping out of school, and that put Josh where he was when he got killed. And that feeling hasn't gone away.

So I'm sitting there watching him do a really BAD job of coaching. And I'm watching the team falling apart, and he just sits there doing NOTHING. And I can't help but thinking about Josh - and what a difference he made on the basketball court. Nobody on the team hustles like Josh did. Nobody rebounds like Josh. And boy, did they need somebody in there to rebound.

But most of all, they needed a coach. And Thursday night, they sure didn't have one. And less you think I was too prejudiced, the guys sitting beside Victoria agreed with me. And yes, ACU lost the game. Our friend Norm, who was on the team last year with Josh, and who was left sitting on the bench waaaay too long, was really hurting over the loss. He could have made a difference on the floor. He said the coach needed a kick in the pants. I told him I would volunteer for the job. Yup, I had a bad coach night.
